PROBLEM
Education today is constantly changing as students are more interested in using their technology devices than the classes.
To help students in visualizing the abstract concepts in chemistry and enable them to view the molecules from all angles in a fun and interactive way.
GOAL
To motivate students to learn more about this subject and enter unknown worlds.
SOLUTION
I created an AR app that is easy and fun to interact with and allows the users to explore and test their knowledge through a quiz.
Tools used: Unity (Vuforia, C#)
AR/VR is a great tool for making learning more immersive and interactive. This helps the students to grasp abstract concepts and practice hand on skills in a low-risk virtual setting.
INITIAL CONCEPT
I first started by creating a storyboard defining the user needs and functions required in my solution.
However, after giving it some more thought I came to a conclusion that I needed to narrow down my scope further down by choosing a targeted population of age 8-12 years and limiting the learning topics.
AR or VR? Which solution would be better?
I conducted interviews with 2 kids to understand their perspective on AR and VR and their needs while learning. Here are the few key takeaways from the interviews -
Kids find the VR headset heavy and difficult to use.
Kids found it difficult to navigate themselves in the VR space.
Kids were very familiar with mobile devices and could easily navigate in AR apps.
Kids were very excited to see augmented virtual objects in the real space and found it fun to interact with.
INTERACTIONS
NEXT STEPS
Conduct usability test and iterate the designs
Create high-fidelity prototypes incorporating the insights from the usability tests.
I think the most important lessons learnt
I would like to explore how teleporting or locomotion for different distances affects people and the safe speed and distance to optimize motion and reduce fatigue in VR users.
I would also like to explore various more about sound
Conveying the idea is just as important as the idea itself, with this project I am confident that I can not only design the interactions but also create a digital model to convey my ideas for a better understanding.
The most important I learnt is to read through the documentation to understand the features provided by oculus and how they can be use in a project.
